Why do you need to choose the right website colors?


When designing your website, one of the things that you have to consider is the color scheme that you will use. If you have a company logo, it is easier to decide on the colors to use. You just have to utilize the logo’s colors on your site. Now, if you do not have a logo yet, it could be quite confusing as to what color combinations will you use on your website.

Before deciding on what colors to use, you must think first of your target audience. Are they young or old? Older people would prefer to look at colors that are on the lighter side, so it is better to use pastel colors or neutral tones. You could get away with using bright colors if your audience will be composed of teenagers.

Colors remind us of certain feelings or emotions. It is also the first thing that we see when we first view some things. So, it is essential that you choose the proper colors for your website. Here is a list of feelings or emotions associated with a certain color.

Warm colors
·         Red – stimulates love, passion, desire, warmth, excitement, appetite, hunger, hazard, caution, action and adventure; grabs attention
·         Pink – evokes softness, charm, gentleness, innocence, youthfulness; it is romantic and feminine
·         Orange - relief, creativeness, youth, fun ; rouses the appetite
·         Yellow - feelings of happiness and warmth; joyfulness, liveliness, laughter, inquisitiveness

Cool colors
·         Blue - serenity, sincerity, honesty, victory, supremacy, professionalism, trust; very calming, suppresses the appetite
·         Purple – creativity, integrity, dream, lavishness, extravagance,  hesitation, vagueness, monarchy
·         Green - health, money, fitness, medicinal, life, animals, environment, greed

Neutral colors
·         Black - seriousness, dark, ambiguity, confidentiality, elegant
·         White - purity, cleanliness, minimalism, clean and pure
·         Brown - natural world, ethnic, ancient; stands for family
·         Gray - unbiased, apathy, snobbish, conservative and reliable

Do not use more than 3 or 4 colors in your site. It can become confusing to your visitors. You also have the option to use a shade of the color that you want. The possibilities are endless when it comes to color. But do keep in mind to always check on the readability of your website’s content when you are experimenting on the color combinations.
